Marketing Blog Entries

Yesterday, Google posted on their blog that the new Caffeine indexing system was completed. This is Google's first major change to their indexing techniques in about four years and will likely have a significant impact on search results for the average user.

I had a rather interesting customer service experience recently that really made my jaw drop. I received an invoice from the accounting firm I had used last year to prepare my taxes. They had thoughtfully filed 2009 tax extensions on my behalf and had kindly charged me $41 for the service. I was bit puzzled by this, as I had prepared and filed my taxes back in February on my own and I had no contact with the accounting firm since last year. So, naturally I called their office and spoke with a kind but rather befuddled staff member.

It's rare that a marketing message catches me off guard, yet this happened recently when I saw a television commercial for T.G.I. Friday's that almost knocked me off my couch. The spot was unremarkable (and clearly forgettable) as I remember nothing about it except the very last moments, when the ad ran the following text below the company logo:

One of the first skills that I learned as a retail sales associate was the difference between features and benefits. Understanding and applying this fundamental concept is a major component to successful selling.

For the uninitiated, features are the qualities of a product or service. For example, having anti-lock brakes in a car is a feature of that product.
Conversely, benefits are what the consumer gains by using the product or service. With anti-lock brakes, the benefit is increased safety.

Last night I saw a commercial for the iPhone that showed the user on his phone call while launching the maps application. I believe that this ad is a direct response to competitor devices that call the iPhone out for not supporting multitasking.

I read today that Google is offering free WiFi at 47 airports until the end of this year. My question is:

What took so long?

It makes perfect sense for Google to find a way to provide (and control) network access. Fundamentally, the distinction between voice and data access is diminishing as cellular networks become increasingly advanced. Wireless is the future battlefield for control of the Internet and Google isn't likely to sit on the side and just watch.
